Becoming an attractive employer for a candidate

I often hear employers say that it's become very difficult to recruit good candidates. I have a completely different opinion. In fact, we employers are all in competition with each other. A few years ago, it was the employer who chose THE best employee. Today, the employee allows himself to choose his employer. So, given that we're in competition, how can we become an attractive employer? Here's a blog on the subject, and I hope it will be useful to you. Please feel free to comment on this blog post.
But what do these candidates want?
Everyone is different however the following points are more important:
- Employees want to be respected. This means at the very least, respecting the rules and standards of their environments. In housekeeping, there is a Joint Committee that regulates the wages and working conditions for all employers who hire employees as intermediaries between a building and a housekeeping employee. Wages range from $17.61 to $18.65 per hour. Do you really think you will be interesting as a potential employer if you pay below these rates??? NO!
- Their personal life is importantEmployees have lives outside of work. And they have the right to refuse to work after their shift. Just as they have the right to want a job that works less than 40 hours a week. Wondering how they support themselves? They have different needs than we do, or different ways to make a success of their lives than we did.
- They are not machines and want to grow. Indeed, our generations favored a stable job, 40 hours per week with, if possible, a good salary. Now, we want to learn, we no longer want to stagnate in the same position for the rest of our days. We want to learn, to move up the hierarchy. To have more latitude, we no longer want to act like robots! And we want to be able to think, create, and achieve success.
- A job well done rather than paying by the minute for time spentHave you ever seen employees waiting by the punch line for the exact time to be worked so they don't get cut off their pay? Again, today's employees don't want to be treated like factory robots anymore. They know what they have to do and how to do it. Deep down, you want the job done right, don't you? So why not evaluate the result rather than the number of minutes it took to do the job? Because punching in doesn't really guarantee that the job was done right, even if the time was respected.
Be a responsible employer.
Notwithstanding the previous point, it is still necessary to assess a reasonable working time. I see plenty of employers offering an amount of money $x.xx to maintain a building. While knowing full well that either the salary or the working time is unrealistic. To all those who use subcontractors, underpaying them is a matter of time and you will lose them! Think beyond your nose. Changing subcontractors or employees all the time is not a win-win for anyone, neither you nor your client. To this end, part of this blog, Tips for dealing with labor shortages, talks about this topic and completes this blog, moreover. I will therefore not dwell on this subject. Not only does this subject shock me, but these employers have no vision for the future for me and I would not want to give them any more attention than they already have!
Becoming an attractive employer in a competitive sector
Of course! It's all up to your creativity. And salary isn't the only way to stand out. However, be competitive. I've read a lot on the subject, and many initiatives are worth highlighting.
- Everyone knows that the younger generation of employees wants us to do more for the environment. Are you making any efforts as a company in this regard? What concrete steps are you taking to improve your methods, products, and services for the good of the Earth?
- What do you do about work-life balance? If a child is on leave, would you allow a parent to bring their child to work for a day? Or even allow your employee to take a paid day off?
- Do you accept remote work? Yet, it has been proven to be more effective than having an employee on-site. But how can you monitor time spent? Stop thinking in terms of time, start thinking in terms of the quality of work, in terms of results. The employee certainly won't be working a 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule. They might go for a jog in the morning and do a load of laundry in the afternoon. And their work will be done throughout the day, sometimes after the children have gone to bed. However, the work will still be done, and probably better, since the employee will have been able to concentrate.
- I read about an employer who started a community garden on the company premises for the benefit of the employees! Why not some good organic vegetables?
- Do your employees have a real chance to improve their lot within your company? Do they have a voice in business decisions? (Remember, they hate being treated like factory robots!)
- A small barbecue on Friday afternoon would also be fun to create a great work atmosphere. A day outdoors to celebrate the end of a stressful period, etc.
In fact, anything is possible; be creative. You don't have to copy your competitor. On the contrary, know how to stand out and be an attractive employer whose positions will be eagerly sought after by candidates!
In marketing, we talk a lot about thecustomer experience. Well to achieve your goal, count on theemployee experience!
This document made by the Government of Quebec is also very well done and provides some great food for thought.
Good thinking!
