Sooner or later, a building manager, a condominium association, or a housing authority will face a troubling situation. For example: an apartment filled with belongings from floor to ceiling, persistent odors, sometimes even pests. But this isn't simply clutter. In fact, it's often a case of Diogenes syndrome. This behavioral disorder leads to extreme unsanitary conditions. For managers, these situations are delicate. On the one hand, they affect the health and safety of the building. On the other hand, they concern the rights of a vulnerable person. Here's how to understand them and intervene methodically\u2014and compassionately.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Diogenes syndrome?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Diogenes syndrome is a behavioral disorder. First, it manifests as a compulsive hoarding of objects, known as syllogomania. Second, it is accompanied by marked neglect of personal hygiene and living conditions, or squalor. Finally, social withdrawal and denial of the problem are often observed. It is sometimes referred to as "morbid squalor." In other words, it is a major squalor caused by a psychological disorder, and not simply by a lack of willpower. Moreover, the syndrome can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, often living in isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with simple disorder<\/b><\/h3>\n

Note: A cluttered home is not necessarily a case of Diogenes syndrome. What distinguishes Diogenes syndrome is its psychological dimension. Furthermore, the unsanitary conditions are sometimes so severe that they render the home dangerous or uninhabitable. This distinction is important. Thus, we are dealing with a health condition. Above all, a vulnerable person is at the heart of the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n
