Vacation time has arrived, and it's well-deserved for all of us. 2020 was truly a trying year for the healthcare sector, as well as for building hygiene and sanitation. And the coming months aren't going to be easy either! We're facing adaptation challenges we've never faced before, all over the world. In this article, I'm taking stock of 2020 and the challenges of 2021, while also telling you about CF Salubrité's latest developments.
Looking back at the discoveries of 2020
Research across the world
WOW What an amazing year this past year has been for research and science! All the efforts focused on finding solutions, prevention, vaccines, treatments, or better ways of doing things. For my part, I was sincerely " packed "By all the concerted efforts to make our efforts a more effective barrier! Every week or month, we have evolved. There is new data and new advances regularly. Science is advancing at high speed for the benefit of all, for our entire planet Earth. It is extraordinary and energizing to see this. This is where we see that science, intelligence is an incredible force.
The population mistreated and imprisoned
The public's response has evolved throughout this crisis. It was first engaged at the height of the crisis in the spring to try to support all those on the front lines. Engaged to try to avoid contaminating our own. But it's so sad to see this escalation in mortality. I believe certain images will be anchored in our collective memory for a long time. This is now part of a global story. There were three types of reactions:
- We react by covering our eyes and ears. This crisis doesn't exist! This is one of the defenses many have had, and this proportion of the population is now unfortunately growing.
- We react by no longer leaving our homes. We no longer meet anyone, even at a distance of two meters or more, and even outside.
- We're afraid, of course. We're counting on our responsibility. So we're working remotely when possible and meeting 2 meters apart in a ventilated area. And everyone's following public health guidelines. We're washing our hands frequently. We're paying our bills to help suppliers survive this crisis.
The world of housekeeping shaken up
I've been involved in the surface hygiene and sanitation sector across Quebec for 35 years. This is the first year I've seen better collaboration between companies. It could have been better, of course. But I see that the housekeeping industry has experienced a bit of a surge in solidarity. This field has always been a closed sector where companies kept their little tips and discoveries to themselves. It was unnatural to help each other. However, in 2020, I saw managers of housekeeping teams or competing companies sharing tips and contacts.
We realize that there are people who clean our spaces and that they are respectable people! In the past, we said that cleaning staff passed between the walls because we didn't notice them. We barely said hello or good evening to them and that was enough. This year has finally allowed us to recognize their contributions to our health. Honestly, I think this is one of the beautiful images I've seen this year, it really makes me happy for them.
The health sector is overloaded and trapped
If there was one sector that was mistreated and, despite itself, caught in this crisis, it was the health sector. Phew, they're not having it easy. Double shifts, difficult working conditions, images that will stay with them. I can only wish them a quick and effective vaccination as soon as possible! I also wish them rest, time with their close family. And a good dose of love and respect! I'm sharing with you an article that appeared:

We can no longer cut the budget for hygiene and sanitation of buildings
However, on the housekeeping side, honestly, I consider COVID-19 to have been almost a help. We accomplished a lot in 2020:
- Train our employees adequately through real professional training.
- Reconsider our concepts of hygiene and sanitation in our buildings. What used to be acceptable because we decided to cover our eyes is now unacceptable.
- We realized that we really needed to buy some quality microfiber cloths and ditch our old sweater scraps or terry cloths.
- We also realized that we needed to reinvest in purchasing more efficient and effective equipment.
- And at the same time, enough was enough with the old scrubbers, the polishers that were more than 10 years old could now retire.
- That the old wooden or metal carts were no longer suitable.
- We also thought that perhaps we should finally listen to our hygiene and sanitation employees. And that the time when they spent time within the walls was over!
- And that we should very possibly think about better arranging our cleaning premises and leaving the old "cocrons" to the old days!! That it was time to make these old premises an old way of doing things.
My message to all housekeeping employees
Every day, I hear this cry from the heart of employees who are disgusted at being treated like the last of this world!!! Of course, I don't want COVID-19 to last forever. On the other hand, I sincerely hope that 2021 pushes us to continue moving forward and finally make this profession a respectable and respected job.

You are taking on an incredible challenge and facing an unprecedented ordeal. I know that what you are going through is truly not easy and that you are probably eager to get back to normal.
