Is it possible to get your employees to do better? YES…but it takes consistent effort! Here's how I get my clients' cleaning staff to do better and better.

Quality control to help your employees do better?

First, we make the effort to take a portrait exact places. That is done from a noted quality control and based on your housekeeping quote as well as containing a fair assessment score. This evaluation should not be made based on the employee you judge, but rather what you see. Thus the evaluation should not include no personal judgment and be based on the facts uniquelyThe amount of work that person does or the time of year should not influence your assessment. This should be done in such a way that you can have an accurate snapshot as of a given day. You can then draw conclusions from this, but the assessment must be accurate from one employee to another and from one floor to another.

For more information on quality control, you can read this article:  Why, when, how to do quality control

We maintain consistency in quality controls

We determine the frequency of quality checks. Of course, if the quality is less than 85%, it must be more frequent (between daily and once a week depending on the severity of the quality control score). Beyond 85%, we can space out the quality checks, while maintaining consistency (for example, every 2 weeks or even monthly). We never do the quality check on the same day or at the same time. Diversify your schedule to be sure that the employee offers consistent quality, regardless of the day, week, or month of the year.

Give the employee the result, even if it's good! There's usually always something the employee can improve on. Congratulate them and encourage them to improve by giving them one or two points for improvement. These points, of course, should be based on the quality control you noted.

Make the effort to do better

For recurring non-compliance points or those that are common to several employees, let them know. I like to create a target sheet with photos that make employees aware of what needs to be corrected. We take the opportunity to conduct a mini-training session to reiterate the correct method or product to use. We post this sheet in the employees' main office so they can refer to it as needed. This sheet should be written in a respectful manner and not contain unnecessary judgment.

It takes time, but I can assure you it works!

When it's very good, you have to say it!

Supervisors tend to focus only on non-compliance. However, praising employees, when it's deserved, gives your team a boost of energy. So, don't hesitate to do it as often as you deserve! You can even bring them smoothies, hot chocolate, donuts, or muffins to congratulate them during this meeting. Smiley Face Emoji Be creative! I saw a college have a giant card signed to thank the housekeeping staff. It was given to them for the holidays. The staff and I were surprised that their work was noticed and appreciated! It was a great initiative.

Go further.

You could even create an internal newspaper. This could contain articles such as:

  • Celebrate employees' birthdays
  • The retirement of an employee
  • Explanation of a maintenance method or a new product
  • Congratulate a work team that received an excellent rating in the last quality control
  • Recipes, games…
  • Announcement of a social activity between employees
  • Etc.

Ultimately, what we create from these actions is a sense of pride and attachment to the company and its values. You will also create a team atmosphere if you can create team moments. Indeed, housekeeping employees are often each on their own floor and only see each other at mealtimes and breaks... and even then. There are teams where there is no longer any team spirit. This seems essential to me to improve the quality of housekeeping work.

This situation can sometimes seem insurmountable. However, I believe that not everything is permanent; it takes effort. If you think you need help, whether it's because your housekeeping quality is no longer adequate or your team is no longer working together, I can help you. I have indeed had the pleasure of working with such teams. It has sometimes been difficult, but each team has returned to a high quality of building maintenance. So, don't be discouraged, Everything is possible for those who put in the time and effort!
