Downtime for managers

For any business, it's healthy to pause and assess whether the focus is still on its goals. Personally, I do this exercise once or twice a year. Along the way, I always keep my goals prominently displayed in my office. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you reflect:

  • Have I deviated from my goals? If so, is it really what I want?
  • What kind of clientele do I really want to work with?
  • What strategies should I take to achieve them?
  • What horizon am I aligned with?
  • And several other questions that we must be honest in answering.
  • We may like to add or subtract goals from our plan.

The acronym SMART

Also make sure your goals follow the SMART acronym principle. *Since I'm training for my first marathon, we're going to be running the experience, but you can apply this to any goal in your life, work, etc.

S     Specific: I want to run a 5k or a marathon?;

M    Measurable: I want to run my marathon in 4 hours 45 minutes;

HAS     Attractive: It must be an exciting, motivating challenge for you and your team;

R     Realistic: Is it achievable if I make the effort to succeed?

T      Temporal: When will I get there? With a clear date, for example October 15, 2019;

An action plan

Well, it's all well and good having goals, but the most important thing is knowing how you'll achieve them. Do you have a plan, a strategy, or even several? This should also be established during this same meeting with yourself and your coworkers. I encourage you to make this a special time, where you won't be disturbed, so you can focus on creating what you really want. This could even be outside your office.

Now, grab your pencils and your fertile imagination!
